A living newspaper is a historic form of theatre that engages audiences by dramatising current events and social issues, often proposing ways to inspire change.
This form of theatre was originally developed in revolutionary Russia in the 1920s, when blue blouse troupes presented the news of the day in a mix of satirical songs, animated posters, dances and pantomime, as a ‘theatre without a stage’, in which the audience could take part.
This new edition is inspired by the radical tradition of living newspapers and has been shaped through interviews, story-gathering and workshops with local community writers, who spent three months working with the Post Workers Theatre to explore news that matters to Bexley’s residents.
The stories were collected across the borough, including work with local organisations, residents and at the Thamesmead Festival in August. This is a live performance created by people living, working and studying in Bexley.
The Bexley Responder: A Living Newspaper is a new work by Post Workers Theatre, with Infinite Opera & James Frost, commissioned by Three Rivers and supported by Arts Council England's Creative People and Places.
