The Solidarity Sound System is a project initiated by members of the Radio Thamesmead broadcast community.
The DIY system was built over June 2021 with the support of artist Dani Smith, with the speaker build forming the core foundation of a community sound system that will be added to over time through further workshops and opportunities for people to get involved.
The system had its first public presentation at the Lakeside Centre as part of the Thamesmead Festival 2021, where DJ’s from the RTM community played a range of sounds from Afrobeat, Dub and Funk to Techno, Electro, D&B and Juke, alongside a special guest set by Dub Plate Pearl.
Dani Smith is an artist based in London. Working with sound, moving image and outsourced manufacturing, he is developing a practice that examines the physical, lived experience through the lens of internet commerce and broadcasting.
